Construction

Project Activities:*

  • Work will resume on Monday, March 3 in Segment A with culvert installation between Hardgrave Road and Hoolihan Road. Road closures will be put back into place from Hardgrave Road to Hoolihan Road daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Access to Geyser Pass during this time will be from Castle Valley.
  • Temporary signals will be used during off-shift hours below Hoolihan Road of the road while the road is reduced to one lane. Motorists need to wait until they have a green signal to proceed.
  • Survey and environmental crews will periodically be onsite between the Pack Creek Road and the Old Airport Road but there will be no traffic impacts at this time.

Project Description

The Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) of the Federal Highway Administration, in cooperation with the US Forest Service (FS), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and San Juan County is rehabilitating and widening 2 segments of the La Sal Mountain Loop Road. This project began on May 20, 2024 and will go through fall of 2025*.

The project is rehabilitating and paving approximately 12.2 miles from the constructed 2012 forest highway project work near the intersection with Oohwah Road and extend to the south and west toward the intersection with Old Airport Road. Work will also include drainage and safety improvements.

*Schedule is subject to change due to weather, equipment, or material delays

Anticipated Construction Impacts 

Access to the following roads will remain open but motorists can expect delays

  • All approach roads and parking areas adjacent to construction zones including campgrounds
  • Ken's Lake Cutoff (access to Ken's Lake will be maintained at all times)
  • Pack Creek Cutoff
  • Pack Creek Road
  • Geyser Pass Road (via Castle Valley)
  • Residential and commercial properties

Construction activities will be staggered to maintain access to private residences. Residential and commercial properties will have access via Spanish Valley or Castle Valley depending on the phase of work.

Segment A (2025) Work will continue this year to finish
Weekday Daytime Closure (8:30a- 5:30p Monday - Friday, no access through during these times)*
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.

  • Segment B (2025)
  • Road will remain open with one-way traffic and motorists will experience delays

Segment C (2025) One way traffic
Full Closure (road is closed to all traffic) will be done in phases

  • Old Airport Road to Ranch Road (Phase 1), or
  • Ranch Road to Ken's Lake Cutoff (Phase 2), or
  • Ken's Lake Cutoff to Pack Creek Road Cutoff (Phase 3)
