Description

Given the lack of existing studies on rural roads for ADS purposes, this research project will be invaluable for Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs) to understand potential impacts, challenges, and opportunities of introducing ADS technology on public lands. Partnerships between academics, private ADS researchers, and FLMAs offer a unique opportunity to study ADS technology in rural settings. This project will consider ADS interactions with local fauna and flora, while also accounting for other roadway variables in rural public land areas (e.g., interactions with trails, pedestrians on road edges, and slow-moving or irregular stopped vehicles). The project will identify testing areas within FLMA units’ diverse roadway topographies, climates, and environments.
