Description

The Bureau of Reclamation has approximately 300 public National Bridge Inventory bridges and 1500 non-public bridges. Almost all of them are at least 50 years old and many of them are in very rural, extra low volume settings. This challenge is the same for many other Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs) across the country.

The goal of this project is to develop an easy-to-use guide for bridge inspectors and bridge designers, with recommendations for practical and low-cost solutions to address bridge rails, curbs, approach barriers, transitions, terminals, and delineation for extremely low volume conditions at three speed categories. The findings of this research were incorporated into an Inspection/Design Guide for Extremely Low Volume Bridges.
