Traffic Noise Model 3.0 Implementation and Future Development
Project Information
Volpe continued to support FHWA’s on the enhancement and the development of traffic noise model 3 series. TNM 3.0 was released in 2020. Volpe provided support in the early implementation of TNM 3.0; including completing the completion of all the associated documentation and supporting materials; developed a series of training videos, and provided support to conduct user group webinars. Based on the feedback from users, VOLPE developed a plan for future improvements of TNM. This support involves providing research and guidance on database requirements for the core acoustics, design intents for various components of the graphical user interface (GUI), and model acoustic improvements. Those improvements include updates to the 3.0 beta user interface, and other improvements informed by research tasks related to roadway noise source heights (tire, engine, exhaust splits) and Reference Energy Mean Emission Levels for different pavements and vehicle types.
