Solar Roadways
Project Information
This small business innovation research project has produced a prototype parking lot in Sagle, ID, that harvests solar radiation and converts it to electricity. The parking surface is composed of a glass laminate with solar cells, light-emitting diodes, circuitry, and electrical resistive elements embedded. The glass laminate is supported by a molded plastic substructure, which is bolted to portland cement concrete as a base. The parking lot is served by a concrete access tunnel to serve as a conduit for wiring on one side and a stormwater drain on the other.
Goals
Develop and construct a prototype structural solar panel. The solar panels will serve as paving surfaces, lighting, energy harvesting and distribution, and snow and ice mitigation.
