Investigation of Key Automated Vehicle Human Factors Safety Issues related to Infrastructure
Project Information
The focus of this work is on the human factors and safety issues associated with driver/vehicle/infrastructure interactions with Level 2 (Limited Self-Driving Automation) and Level 3 (Combined Function Automation). The following text gives some background to Level 2 and Level 3 vehicle automation. During Level 2 operations, the driver may interact with automation of at least two primary control functions designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions (e.g., longitudinal and lateral control, or steering and speed control). During Level 3 operations, the automation enables the driver to cede full control of all safety-critical functions under certain traffic or environmental conditions and in those conditions to rely heavily on the vehicle to monitor for changes in those conditions requiring transition back to driver control.
