Innovative Practices to Educate Bridge Engineering Practitioners

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-21-0036
Project Abstract:

The work to be accomplished as part of this project will:

  • Identify gaps in bridge engineering education at both the university and continuing education levels by collecting and synthesizing publicly available data along with data collected from both educational and practitioner surveys.
  • Identify innovative teaching platform(s) and media, both existing and emerging, that can be effectively used to further bridge engineering education in both university and continuing education settings.
Project Status:
Active
Project Funding Amount (Contract Award Amount):
$112,413.00
Start Date:
End Date:
Public Access Plan:
Yes
Grant/Contract ID:

FHWA Program Area:
  • Infrastructure
Fiscal Year / AMRP Program / AMRP Activity:
  • FY 2002-2022 / Infrastructure / Structures
Project Outputs:
  • Technical report.
Project Outcomes/Impact:

This study will research how the structural engineering college curricula in the United States are preparing engineers with the necessary skills and knowledge for the bridge engineering practice and identify and prioritize bridge engineering continuing education gaps and develop education solutions for these gaps. It will also research and identify innovative teaching platforms and media that can accommodate the needs, schedule, and learning preferences of a current practicing bridge designer. There is high potential for the results of this study to be implemented in university curricula and by developers of continuing education programs, particularly given that resources and guidance will be offered in a way that provide the offerors with necessary flexibility.
