Freeway Guide Sign Performance at Complex Interchanges: Reducing Information Overload

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-20-0023
Project Abstract:

Complex freeway interchanges are known to be difficult to navigate. Transportation agencies are urgently in need of detailed and performance-based guidelines for guide sign design at freeway interchanges.

This study will fully demonstrate the power of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) 2 Naturalistic Driving Study data towards the following much needed research breakthroughs:

  • Field data-based freeway interchange guide sign information overload thresholds (per location and for sign sequences) by roadway, traffic, background, and visibility conditions.
  • Impacts of sign information complexity levels on driver behavior relevant to safety.
  • Guidelines to reduce information overload and improve sign spreading.
  • Recommendations for changes to existing freeway signing standards and manuals.

The findings of this project will provide practical and field data-supported sign performance metrics at complex freeway interchanges that will likely significantly improve existing signing guidelines and tools. Freeway interchanges are crash hotspots; therefore, the findings of this study can be directly translated to large reductions in fatalities and injuries.
