Evaluation of Low Cost Safety Improvements Transportation Pooled Fund Study (ELCSI-PFS) (8 Project Titles)
Project Information
The pooled fund study was established by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2004 with a goal of developing reliable estimates of the safety effectiveness, or crash modification factors (CMFs), for low-cost safety improvement strategies. The initial study had 24 State participants, and was to end in 2010. Fifteen years later, ELCSI-PFS has 41 member States, and has produced more than 60 products. This Study is a nationwide effort to save lives and prevent injuries with low-cost solutions. This research develops reliable estimates of the effectiveness of the safety and operational improvements identified by the ELCSI-PFS Advisory Committee (TAC). These estimates are determined by conducting scientifically rigorous before-and-after evaluations at sites in the United States, where these strategies are being implemented. The ELCSI-PFS facilitates technology transfer and knowledge sharing among State members and FHWA stakeholders. Studies Include: 1) enhanced shoulder or in-lane delineation and marking for sharp curves; 2) enhanced delineation along the curve; 3) advanced warning of unexpected changes in horizontal alignment; 4) dynamic curve warning system; 5) traffic calming at small-town intersections; 6) offset left-turn lanes; 7) advance street name signing; 8) combinations of shoulder and centerline rumble strips/stripes; and 9) lane width/shoulder width combinations.
