Evaluation of Additional Alternative Arrow Types and Sizes for Overhead Arrow-per-Lane (OAPL) Guide Signs
Project Information
The objective of this project is to conduct a study to explore and evaluate the following with drivers from urban and rural regions:
1) the effectiveness of the alternatives for Partial-width Overhead Arrow-per-Lane (OAPL) guide signs for single and multiple exits.
2) the alternative arrow sizing for partial-width OAPL guide signs, including arrow height, proportionality, and form proportionate to the size of the sign legend.
The sign study shall address the following:
- Drivers’ comprehension of partial-width OAPL guide sign alternatives.
- Drivers’ understanding of the roadway and exit lane geometry associated with partial-width OAPL guide sign alternatives, especially for two exits closely spaced.
- If the drivers’ comprehension and understanding of the sign alternatives and roadway geometry changes based on different locations of the sign legend and “EXIT ONLY” message, Drivers’ lane changing behavior for each signing alternative, Drivers’ comprehension of the arrows.
- Time required for drivers’ to comprehend each arrow size and signing alternative.
- Drivers’ preferences among the alternatives of arrow sizes and signs.
