Development of Advanced Connection Systems for Adjacent Concrete Box Beams
Project Information
This project includes the full-scale structural testing of four independent connection systems for adjacent box beams. Each system will be tested under millions of cycles fatigue loads in order to replicate decades of distress on the bridge system. Two of the connection systems will include conventional grout and transverse posttensioning. Two of the connection systems will include field-cast ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and no transverse posttensioning. Findings should include recommendations of anticipated behavior from good current practice systems as well as advanced systems that potentially offer simplified construction and better long-term performance.
Goals
This objective of this project is to advance the state-of-the-practice for longitudinal connections between adjacent box beams, thus allowing broader use of this very cost effective bridge superstructure system.
