Best Practices for the Use of the Federal Highway Administration Traffic Noise Model
Project Information
The traffic noise model (TNM) 2.5 includes a user guide and technical manual which provide a great deal of information about the functional and technical aspects of the model, but neither provides guidance to the user on the best way to use the model. User guidance for best practices appear in the TNM FAQ website and in the TNM 2.5 Validation Study. However, the Federal Highway Administration has not offered formal training or developed comprehensive approaches for best practices on use of the model.
Left to their own devices, TNM users developed methods to use the model in ways that worked best for them but did not necessarily provide accurate results. This project builds on and continues the research performed under NCHRP project 25-34 and in the TNM Sensitivity Analysis project.
The objective of this project is to develop best practices for TNM modeling and to increase the understanding of:
- TNM data sources.
- Sensitivity of TNM traffic inputs.
- Improve TNM output tables.
- Improve noise barrier optimization methods.
- To identify quality assurance review processes.
