Transportation Engineering Approaches to Climate Resiliency

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-14-0150
Project Abstract:

The goal of this project was to examine a range of projects in development around the United States to increase our knowledge on how to conduct project-level engineering assessments to asses climate change risks and develop adaptation options for a range of project types (pavements, culverts, bridges, etc.) and climate change stressors (flooding, drought, etc.).

Project Status:
Completed
Project Funding Amount (Contract Award Amount):
$1,736,827.00
Start Date:
End Date:
Public Access Plan:

FHWA Program Area:
  • Infrastructure
  • Planning, Environment, and Realty
Fiscal Year / AMRP Program / AMRP Activity:
  • FY 2002-2022 / Planning, Environment, and Realty / Resiliency
FHWA Activity:
  • Data and Analysis
Project Outputs:

This project produced nine case studies that focused on addressing resilience in project development and preliminary engineering, and a synthesis report that collect lessons learned and strategies for addressing resilience at the project level.

Project Outcomes/Impact:

The processes included in and modeled by this work have been used by some States and consulting firms to analyze project level risk and to develop solutions.

This project and related engineering and project development focused research conducted by Federal Highway Administration serves as the basis for an upcoming National Highway Institute course focused on resilience.  We plan to pilot the course in March 2022.
