Transfer Length and Development Length Behaviors of Lightweight High-Performance Concrete Girders

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-06-0025
Project Abstract:

This Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research program focuses on lightweight high performance concrete (LWHPC) in the gap of equilibrium densities ranging from conventional lightweight to normal weight concrete. The transfer and development length behavior portion of the investigation involves testing 12 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) girders composed of LWHPC produced using aggregates representative of those available in North America. The result of the study will be to recommend changes to the AASHTO load and resistance factor design (LRFD) bridge design specification relevant to LWHPC.

Goals

This project aims to recommend design specifications for the transfer and development length of prestressing strand in lightweight high-performance concrete girders.

Project Outputs:

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials specifications for designing with these materials have not been significantly updated since the 1960s. This work, along with the work of National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 18-15, updates the specifications appropriately for the modern version of these materials.
