RLINE Source Type in EPA Air Quality Dispersion Model AERMOD

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-17-0042
Project Abstract:

Quality Models (Appendix W to 40 CFR Part 51). The guideline reported on the enhancements to be made to its near-field dispersion model – AERMOD – and that CALINE3 would be replaced by AERMOD as the preferred model for refined transportation project analyses beginning in January 2020.  After the removal of CALINE it was Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) priority to make sure the AERMOD was able to accurately predict concentrations in the near road environment for transportation purposes. The Environmental Protection Agency and FHWA collaborated on scientific research and evaluation of the RLINE module for integration into AERMOD.

Project Outcomes/Impact:

In August, 2019, the EPA released an updated version of the AERMOD Modeling System (Version 19191), which includes AERMOD executables, source code, documentation, and test cases. Specifically, for transportation purposes this new version adds the RLINE and RLINEXT source types to the existing LINE/AREA and VOLUME source types.
