The National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) will develop Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Covered Bridges with illustrated draft case studies. This document is intended to answer a longstanding need for uniform standards that may be applied to treatment projects involving historic wooden covered bridges. It will also provide a framework for a responsible preservation practice that recognizes the unique conditions of historic preservation in the covered wood bridge context. Its purpose is to clearly define ideal historic covered bridge best practices through the standards, and to illustrate those ideals and to suggest ways of achieving them through the guidelines. The revised guidelines will reflect current best practices in treatment methodology and the suitability of these methods in relation to the application of The Secretary of Interior's Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties.

Goals

The primary objective of this project is to develop the Standards for the Treatment of Historic Covered Bridges with Illustrated Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring, and Reconstructing Historic Bridges. The guidelines will be an illustrated preservation and training guide.
