Exploring Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) to Enable Connected Transportation Services

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-19-0013
Project Abstract:

With recent advances in the connected vehicle program pointing to a transition from research to deployment, there is a significant risk that the resulting system will provide incomplete coverage of roadways and also not serve the large number of nonmotorized travelers in the system. This is primarily due to the reliance on traditional infrastructure-dependent wireless networks.

To address this risk, this Exploratory Advanced Research (EAR) Program project aims to fully investigate the use of mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) to allow for a connected transportation system that meets the needs of all travelers. This project brings together a unique team with expertise in MANETs and connected vehicle applications. The University of Virginia team has well established ties to State and local agencies that will be responsible for supporting connected transportation. In addition, the team is led by computer scientists with experience in investigating advanced computing and networking technology applications in surface transportation.
