Enhancing Conspicuity for Standard Signs and Retroreflectivity Strips on Posts

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-19-0022
Project Abstract:

Section 2A.15 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) provides options for enhanced conspicuity for standard signs, however, there is not much information to determine the effectiveness of various methods nor is there much information available for determining the magnitude of the effectiveness of various options.

There have been previous studies that increase the size of a treatment, such as a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) case study that was conducted in Winston Salem NC. This study evaluated treatments including adding larger (30-Inch) stop signs with advance traffic control sign/pavement markings, and additional larger stop signs with pavement markings. The combination of enhanced countermeasures installed reduced total crashes at intersections by approximately 55 percent, and total injuries by an average of 70 percent per year.

This study explores the effects and evaluates the effectiveness of the option for enhanced conspicuity for standard signs.
