Developing Connected Simulation to Study Interactions Between Drivers, Pedestrians, and Bicyclists

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-17-0021
Project Abstract:

Connected simulation technology offers enormous potential to study interactions between drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists and assess the impact of new technologies on safety and mobility. This project will research the development of an innovative mixed-mode connected driving, pedestrian, and bicycling simulator system. This includes incorporated graphical avatars into the simulation that represent the live movements of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, and the development of new methods of scenario control and data analysis appropriate for multiparticipant simulation research. Experiments will examine the interactions between drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The goal is to transform simulation technology to enable studies of how the expectations, anticipations, and responses of all road users are influenced by futuristic vehicle technologies, new infrastructure designs, and by each other.
