Behavior and Design of Ultra-High Performance Concrete Structures

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-18-0005
Project Abstract:

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is the next generation of concrete, offering performance attributes that can far exceed those of common conventional concretes. The use of UHPC for field-cast connections between prefabricated components has opened the door to wider uses of UHPC in the highway infrastructure. Owners and designers are beginning to desire UHPC-based structural solutions that deliver new, advantageous structural configurations, accelerated construction, and enhanced durability. This research effort will use experimental testing and analytical processes to develop appropriate practices wherein UHPC components can be fabricated and deployed in the U.S. highway transportation system.

Goals:

The objective of this research effort is to develop knowledge of the structural behavior of UHPC components that supports American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the broader community’s movement toward the use of UHPC in primary structural components. These research findings will be critical to the appropriate use of UHPC in the highway infrastructure.
